Your roof is the biggest water collector on the property, and your downspouts decide where all of it lands. When they dump right at the foundation, they saturate the clay exactly where you least want it. Burying and routing them is one of the highest-value fixes we do in Waco.
Waco averages about 36.40 inches of rain a year, and a single storm sheds a lot of it off the roof in a few concentrated spots. On Blackland clay, water dumped at the foundation doesn’t soak harmlessly away — it saturates the perimeter soil, swelling the clay against the slab and feeding the wet-dry swing that moves foundations. Splash blocks move that water a couple of feet; it just runs back. Buried extensions move it where it actually needs to go.
Downspout lines carry clean roof water and should move it fast, so we use solid pipe — you don’t want that concentrated flow leaking back into the clay next to the house. It’s the opposite of a French drain, which is meant to let water in. Mixing the two up keeps water right where you don’t want it — against the foundation.
A common question is how far a buried downspout line really needs to run. On sandy soil, a few feet past the foundation might do. On Blackland clay the answer is farther — you want that concentrated roof water discharging well clear of the zone where the clay’s moisture affects the slab, ideally to a lower area, a pop-up emitter out in the yard, or the main drainage line. A line that daylights right at the edge of the flower bed just moves the saturation a few feet; getting it truly clear of the foundation is the whole point.
