Clay won't let much water soak away into the surrounding ground, so a French drain here works as a collector — it gathers water in gravel and pipe and carries it by gravity to an outlet off the lot. We wrap it in filter fabric because clay fines will silt a drain shut fast without it, and we build in real slope. A French drain designed as if the clay drains freely is exactly the failure we get called to replace.
For a typical yard drain we trench about 18 to 24 inches deep and 12 to 18 inches wide, adjusted to where the water sits and what we're protecting. The trench has to fall continuously toward its outlet — we hold at least a one-percent slope so water keeps moving and doesn't sit in the pipe.
Somewhere lower than the drain and off your lot: daylighting to a lower area, an approved street or alley discharge, a pop-up emitter, or a sump pump on flat lots. Because the clay won't take the water, the outlet is the most important part of the whole design — a drain with nowhere to discharge just moves the puddle.
Foundation watering is a real practice on expansive clay — the goal is to keep the soil moisture around the slab from crashing during a hot, dry summer, because it's the dry-out and re-wetting swing that does the damage.
