A drain that used to work and doesn’t anymore is one of our most common calls — and in Blackland clay, a lot of them failed for reasons specific to this ground. The good news: most are fixable once you know what actually went wrong.
When we dig up a failed drain here, it’s nearly always one of these:
We start at the outlet and work back, because a buried or missing discharge is the easiest thing to miss and the most common local failure. From there we check slope, look for crushed sections, and figure out whether the line silted up from missing fabric. Sometimes the repair is clearing and re-daylighting the outlet or adding the sump the original lacked; sometimes it’s replacing a crushed run; sometimes the honest answer is rebuilding a section correctly so you’re not back here next year.
Our goal on a repair is the same as on a new install: build it so it keeps working — fabric in the clay, real slope, pipe that won’t crush, and an outlet that stays clear. We’ll tell you plainly whether your drain is worth repairing or whether you’ll save money rebuilding the bad part right.
If we had to name the single most common reason a Waco drain fails, it’s that it was built with nowhere for the water to actually go — installed as if the clay would absorb it. On Blackland ground, a drain with no positive outlet is doomed from the first storm, however neatly it was laid. When we find that, the fix usually isn’t patching; it’s giving the system the outlet or the sump it needed all along, and we’ll show you exactly why the original never stood a chance.

“Drain cleaning” means two completely different jobs in Waco, and being sold the wrong one is the most common way people spend money twice.
The first is the sewer line — the pipe carrying waste out of the house. That is a plumber’s job, and if your problem is a slow bathtub or a backing-up toilet, a plumber is who you want. We do not do sewer work and we will tell you so on the phone rather than sending somebody out.
The second is the yard drain — the French drain, catch basin, channel drain or buried downspout line that is supposed to move rainwater away from the house and has stopped. That is our work, and in Waco it fails for reasons the Blackland clay creates.
Silt. Blackland clay breaks down to a fine sediment that travels with runoff and settles inside the pipe. In a drain built without filter fabric, or with the fabric wrapped the wrong way, that silt fills the rock bed from the bottom up until the drain is a decorative trench.
Roots. A perforated pipe carrying water through dry clay is the most attractive thing in the yard to a live oak or a pecan. Roots enter at the perforations and at unglued joints, and once they are in, the pipe is a filter rather than a drain.
Crushing and settlement. Clay that shrinks in a Waco August and swells with the first real rain moves everything buried in it. Pipe laid without proper bedding gets pinched, and a drain with a belly in it holds water instead of carrying it. Vehicles parked over a shallow run finish the job.
The outlet. The most common failure of all, and the cheapest to fix: the discharge end has been buried by fill, grown over, crushed by a mower, or blocked by a rodent nest, so a perfectly good drain has nowhere to put the water.
Clearing a drain and repairing a drain are not the same service. Jetting or rodding a silted line will move water again, and if the drain was built correctly and simply needs the sediment out, that is the right and the cheaper answer. But a line that has been crushed, has a belly, has been root-invaded through its perforations, or was built without fabric in the first place will silt up again within a season or two — and a contractor who clears it every year without saying so is selling you a subscription.
We camera or excavate enough of the run to find out which one you have before quoting, and we will tell you when the honest answer is that a section needs rebuilding rather than rinsing.

No, and it is worth being clear which one you need. Sewer cleaning is the waste line out of the house and is a plumber's job. Drain cleaning in the sense we mean it is the yard drainage system — French drains, catch basins, channel drains and buried downspout lines that carry rainwater away from the foundation. If your problem is indoors, call a plumber. If it is water standing in the yard or against the house after rain, that is our side of it.
The symptom is often identical — water sits where it used to drain — so it is diagnosed rather than guessed. A clogged line usually still takes water slowly and backs up at the inlet. A crushed or bellied line frequently shows a soft or sunken strip of ground along the run, and water that never moves at all. Checking the outlet first settles a surprising number of cases: if nothing is coming out of the discharge end during a hose test, the problem is between the two ends.
It depends entirely on why it clogged. A correctly built drain that has silted up can be cleared and will keep working. A drain built without filter fabric, or with a belly in the run, or with roots through the perforations, will silt up again in a season or two — clearing it is a temporary fix and should be described as one. We look before we quote so you know which you are buying.
Almost always silt and almost always a fabric problem. Blackland clay sheds a very fine sediment that migrates into the rock bed and the pipe. A drain built with the right fabric, the right rock and the right fall sheds that sediment; a drain built without it accumulates it. A yearly clear-out that never gets to the cause is the sign of the second kind.
Regularly, in Waco. A perforated pipe moving water through dry clay is the wettest thing in the yard for most of the summer, and live oak and pecan roots find it through the perforations and through unsealed joints. Once a run is root-filled, the affected section is rebuilt rather than cleaned — cutting the roots out leaves the entry points behind.
It depends on which of the failures above you have and how much of the run is affected, which is why nobody should quote you a number over the phone. Clearing an outlet that has been buried is a small job. Rebuilding a bellied section is a bigger one. The assessment is free and it tells you which conversation you are having.
Most repairs are same-day once the cause has been found. A rebuilt section of run, or a repair that turns out to need re-grading around the discharge, generally moves into a second day. Any timeline is confirmed after somebody has been out and looked, not before.
